Understanding Apple's "Hide My Email" Feature
Do you see an unfamiliar email address on your invoice or notice an email address with random numbers and letters connected to your account? This might be because you used the "Hide My Email" feature from Apple. Let’s explain.
So what is "Hide My Email"?
"Hide My Email" is a feature offered by Apple that allows you to create unique, random email addresses that forward to your personal email account. This helps you keep your personal email address private and minimize spam. You can use these random email addresses when signing up for apps, websites, or newsletters, ensuring your personal email remains secure and private.
How Does "Hide My Email" Work?
When you use "Hide My Email," Apple generates a unique email address for you. Any emails sent to this address are automatically forwarded to your personal email. This way, the sender never knows your actual email address, adding an extra layer of privacy to your online interactions.
Not sure if you used it? Find out from the steps below:
-
Check Your Email Addresses:
- If you see an email address that ends in @privaterelay.appleid.com, it means you used the "Hide My Email" feature. These addresses are unique and random, and they act as a relay to forward emails to your real email address.
-
Through iCloud Settings on Your Device:
-
On your iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on your name at the top to access your Apple ID settings.
- Tap on iCloud.
- Select Hide My Email.

-
On your iPhone or iPad:
-
Through iCloud on the Web:
- Visit iCloud.com and log in with your Apple ID.
- Click on Account Settings.

How "Hide My Email" is Connected to Your Apple ID
When you use "Hide My Email," it is directly tied to your Apple ID. This means:
- The feature uses the email address associated with your Apple ID to forward the emails sent to the random addresses.
- You can manage and view all your random email addresses across any device where you are signed in with your Apple ID.
- The unique email addresses will stop working if you sign out of your Apple ID or change the email associated with your Apple ID.
